Hardscaping is the built part of a yard: patios, walkways, retaining walls, and seat walls. In Santa Barbara a lot of it exists because the lot slopes. A wall holds the soil back, and a patio gives you one flat spot for a table.
What decides whether stonework lasts is underneath it. Patios and paths go on a compacted base, and walls get drainage behind them so water can't build up and push on the stone. The sandstone wall and flagstone path in Montecito, in our gallery, were built that way.
We work in sandstone, flagstone, and pavers, and we choose based on the house. New stone looks best when it's close in color and texture to what's already there. For people who want a stone look without joints, stamped concrete is another option.

Hardscaping & Masonry: questions we hear
Flagstone, pavers, or stamped concrete: how do I choose?
Flagstone has an irregular, natural look and suits informal gardens. Pavers are uniform and you can repair one section at a time. Stamped concrete has no joints for weeds to grow in, but it can crack and is harder to patch so it isn't noticeable. We go over the options for your yard at the estimate.
Does a retaining wall need drainage?
Yes. Water that builds up behind a wall pushes on it, so we put gravel and a drain line behind the stone to let it out. Taller walls can also need a permit or engineering, so check local rules before building.
